Welcome to my quarterly newsletter, a new form of sharing my photography work outside of social media. Some of my recent assignments include Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin’s wedding for the New York Times,  and stories about Alabama women’s reproductive health for The Guardian, and Politico. I also had the honor of photographing baseball legend Reverend Bill Greason for the New York Times.

In 2023 I received a Verdant Fund Project Grant for one of my longform documentary projects. The project is about the historic Mt Vernon Arsenal / Searcy Insane Hospital in South Alabama. After nearly eight years of stop-and-go work on this project, I am pleased to say I am now in the final stages of publishing the body of work as an educational booklet and gallery/museum show.

This summer will begin my fourth year of work on my largest-scale documentary project to date, titled “The Promised Land”. In this future photo-series and experimental film, I take an immersive approach to documenting the daily lives of religious community members living on a compound in rural Alabama.  

Some artwork I’ve enjoyed lately: Sarah Cwynar’s book Glass Life (an investigation of color and image-driven consumer culture) has been a thrill to work through and hurt my brain in all the best ways.

I thoroughly appreciate the very-Southern visuals in Waxahatchee’s new music video, “Right Back to it”.

One of my favorite artists and dear friends Jenny Fine wrote this incredible piece about the loss of her sister Beth and the urgent need for Alabama to expand Medicaid.
